The Kanda Puranam,
the Tamil iteration of the Skanda Purana, describes the legend of
Surapadma. He is said to have engaged in intense austerities to
propitiate the deity Shiva, who appeared to grant the asura a boon. He asked for the boon of living for 108 yugas,
and reign over the 1008 worlds. He marries Padmakomalai, with whom he
sired several sons, the eldest of whom is Banukopan. Establishing his
capital at a city named Viramakendiram located at the eastern sea, he
ruled the world. An enemy of the devas, he starts to harass them, and
attacks a number of Indra's sons. He also desires Indrani,
the wife of Indra. When Indra and his wife fled to the earth, Murugan
sends his messenger named Viravakutevar to urge Surapadma to cease his
activities, but to no avail. Murugan declares war on Surapadma, and in
the ensuing battle, all of the latter's sons except Iraniyan are slain.
Unwilling to concede his defeat, Surapadma retreated to the sea,
assuming the form of a mango tree. Murugan slices the tree in twain,
from which emerges a cock and a peacock. The deity starts to employ the
cock as his battle standard, and the peacock as his mount.

Sooran poor (Battle of Lord Murugan and Soorapathman)
It’s believed that Lord Murugan defeated the demon Soorapathman and his army with the “Vel” (lance) given to him by his mother. Lord Murugan fought for six days, and on the last day he liberated “Devas” from “Asuras”.
“Sooran Poor” is held to celebrate the victory on the sixth day at dusk. The temple courtyard and backyard are made to look like a battle field. Idols of Lord Murugan and Sooran are taken out of the temple to have the battle and the celebration.
Devotees of Lord Murugan have a fast for six days during these days. It’s unlike any other fast; devotees do not have any meals except a glass of fresh milk and fruits in the night.It’s called “Upavaasam” (total fast). The seventh day is known as “Paaranai”
Devotees, who have fasted for six days wake up at dawn, have a head shower, go and pray at the temple, cook and have a vegetarian meal before the sun rises.
The devotees who observed the fast are not supposed to witness “Sooran Poor”, because it is considered inauspicious to witness a killing of Sooran after fasting

During Skanda Sashti
Thirukalyanam of Lord Muruga concludes the Skanda Sashti festival held
after Amavasya in the Tamil month Aippasi. Thirukalyanam 2023 date is
November 19. After the sixth day Skanda Sashti fasting and
Soorasamharam, Thirukalyanam is held on the seventh day. It is a major
event in important Lord Muruga temples. On the Thirukalyanam day, Lord
Muruga marries Goddess Devasena. This divine marriage is celebrated with
all traditional rituals by Murugan devotees.
Special arrangements are made on the Thirukalyanam day. The previous day
is the Surasamharam and this holy event too attracts thousands of
devotees. Lord Muruga is also known as Skanda, Subrahmanya, Kartik and
Kartikeya. Today, Thirukalyanam is observed in Murugan Temples around
the world especially in South India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and
South Africa.

ශෂ්ටි දේව්‍යෙයි නමෝ නමහඃ
ශෂ්ඨී දේවිය ශක්ත ධර්මය තුළ සඳහන් වන ප්‍රධාන දෙවඟනක් වන අතර ඇය
කාර්තිකේයයන්ගේ පළමු පතිනියයි. දේවී භාගවත මහා පුරාණයේ නව වන ස්කන්ධයට අනුව
මෙන්ම බ්‍රහ්ම වෛවර්ත පුරාණයේ ප්‍රක්‍රිති කණ්ඩය තුළ ද ශෂ්ඨි දේවියගේ
මහිමය සඳහන් කරනු ලබයි. පුරාණ මූලාශ්‍රයන්ට අනුව ඇයව ශෂ්ඨි දේවිය ලෙස
හඳුන්වනු ලබන්නේ මූල ප්‍රක්‍රිති දුර්ගා දේවියගේ සය වන භූතිය වන හෙයිනි.
එමෙන්ම ඇය උමයංගනාවගේ වැඩිමහල් ලේලියයි. ඇයට දරු සම්පත් ලැබීමට ආශිර්වාද
කිරීමේ බලය පවතින හෙයින් ඇය බ්‍රහ්ම වෛවර්ත පුරාණය තුළ ඇයව 'බාලදා' ලෙසින්
හඳුන්වයි. ඇය තාරකාසුර සංහාරයේදී දෙවියන්ගේ සේනා පාර්ශවය නියෝජනය කල හෙයින්
'දේවසේනා' ලෙසින් මාත්‍රි ගණයන් සහ දේව ගණයන් අතර ප්‍රකට වූ අතර නාරායනයන්
ඇගේ මහිමය මහා සෘෂි නාරදයන්ට දේශනා කරනු ලබයි.
